“Artificial Intelligence in Political Discourse: A Case Study of Political Chatbots”
Abstract:
This study investigates the application of artificial intelligence in political discourse, specifically in the creation of chatbots that represent differing political perspectives. By examining a conversation with these chatbots, the study illuminates how AI can elucidate complex political topics and serve as a tool for discourse analysis.
Introduction:
As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into everyday life, it is also finding its way into political dialogue (Brundage et al., 2018). This study presents a case study of chatbots designed to represent far-right, far-left, centrist, and EU perspectives on a range of political issues.
Body:
In examining the chatbots’ responses to questions about controversial topics such as abortion, immigration, and gun control, we find stark differences that mirror human political discourse. The far-right chatbot frequently invokes constitutional rights and individual liberties (McCaffrie & Marsh, 2019). The far-left chatbot, on the other hand, emphasizes social justice and wealth redistribution (Schlosberg, 2016). The centrist bot balances both sides, highlighting a need for compromise, while the EU bot emphasizes cooperation and human rights, aligning with the EU’s stated values (Bickerton, 2012).
In questions about book banning, the death penalty, and the role of corporations, the chatbots again represent their respective political ideologies. The far-right bot tends to support traditional values and economic freedom, while the far-left bot stresses equality and human rights. The centrist bot seeks balance and the EU bot underscores EU policy principles.
Interestingly, the chatbots’ responses to questions about the Southern Confederacy, the space program, and the taxation of religious organizations suggest that these AI entities can also exhibit nuanced understanding of complex issues (Dignum, 2017).
Finally, when asked about reparations, succession, and social media regulation, the chatbots demonstrate their ability to consider multiple facets of the issues and generate responses based on their respective political ideologies.
Conclusion:
This study reveals how AI chatbots can illuminate political dialogue and serve as tools for discourse analysis. It suggests that AI can contribute meaningfully to political discourse, offering insights into different perspectives and fostering a deeper understanding of complex issues. However, the results also emphasize the importance of ensuring that such technologies are used responsibly and do not reinforce harmful stereotypes or biases (Crawford & Calo, 2016).
